Description: Wetlands are lands that are seasonally or permanently flooded by shallow water. They also include lands where the water table is close to the surface. The wetland polygons are managed independently from other hydro data classes and may overlap water bodies or other hydro data. Not all wetlands have been identified and mapped. Active maintenance is ongoing province wide. The currency and accuracy of the spatial representation is variable and requires on-the-ground verification. This class has related tables. Description: This feature class depicts areas regulated by the Authority as 'Other Areas' under the Generic Regulation of the Conservation Authorities Act known as Ontario Regulation 97/04. In the NPCA's implementation 'Other Areas' specifically means a 30m wetland allowance that identifies lands where development could interfere with the function of a wetland. Please note that the extent of the allowance data only corresponds to the associated regulated wetlands that are currently mapped and is not an exhaustive inventory of this regulation feature. There are both regulated wetland and wetland allowances not mapped that are covered by the text of the regulation.
Description: Highly Vulnerable Aquifers (HVAs) are a vulnerable area delineated for the Source Water Protection Assessment Report (Chapter 4 - NPCA, 2010). HVAs are identified for priority protection of groundwater quality under the Provincial Policy Statement (MMAH, 2005). The HVAs were based largely upon earlier vulnerability mapping completed as part of the 2005 NPCA Groundwater Study. This earlier mapping combined two vulnerability assessment methods: (i) intrinsic susceptibility index (ISI) and (ii) aquifer vulnerability index (AVI). Transport pathways, such as unused private wells, were also considered as they can increase groundwater vulnerability. This data forms part of the local Niagara Assessment Report Database (ARDB).
Description: Intake Protection Zones (IPZs) are the priority vulnerable areas delineated for the Source Water Protection Assessment Report (Chapters 5 through 11 - NPCA, 2010). IPZs are identified for protection of municipal water treatment plant supply under the Clean Water Act (CWA). There are usually both primary intake protection zones (IPZ-1s) and secondary intake protection zone (IPZ-2s) for each water treatment plant intake. Some intakes have a third intake protection zone (IPZ-3s), which is an area where modelling has demonstrated that contaminants released during an event may be transported to the intake and cause an adverse effect. There are six (6) water treatment plants in NPCA; Grimsby, Rosehill (Fort Erie), DeCew Falls, Welland, Port Colborne and Niagara Falls. This data forms part of the local Niagara Assessment Report Database (ARDB).
